Rick Ratliff Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Ratliff is the acting president and CEO of SureScripts. His over 20 years of leadership experience in technology includes management positions at IBM, VHA Inc. and HEALTHvision, Inc. For most of his career, Mr. Ratliff has been a leader in the strategic use of information technology in various healthcare environments with a particular focus on the electronic exchange of health information between a patient’s care providers.
Since November of 2002, when Mr. Ratliff joined SureScripts as the chief operating officer, he has led the effort to establish the national network for electronic prescribing called the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange™. Mr. Ratliff is leading community pharmacy’s efforts to transition from paper-based to paperless prescribing as a means of improving the quality, safety and efficiency of the prescribing process.
Prior to joining SureScripts, Mr. Ratliff was co-founder and senior vice president of HEALTHvision Inc. where he created the original business and strategic plan for the company’s clinical messaging business. His responsibilities included managing the company’s sales and marketing organization, as well as developing and implementing business plans for customer relationship management, eHealth consulting services and eCommerce business development.
Previously, Mr. Ratliff served as vice president, healthcare information technologies, for VHA, Inc. While at VHA, he managed the development and rollout of VHAseCURE.net, a nationwide private network designed as a Web-based health information utility for the VHA healthcare organizations across the United States.
He began his career two decades ago as a systems engineer at IBM Corporation and advanced through a succession of management positions with increasing responsibility, including leadership positions on IBM’s healthcare team as segment manager and client executive.
Mr. Ratliff graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Tulsa.
Stephen Hall, CPA Executive Vice President, Finance and Planning Mr. Hall is a CPA with over 20 years of financial management and operations experience, with the most recent 15 years focused on the managed care and pharmaceutical industries. Mr. Hall has an extensive background in product development, process improvement, systems development and financial management. Mr. Hall is currently managing SureScripts' technology, marketing and strategic business alliances and has been instrumental in developing the business and financial plans as well as assisting in the execution of key business initiatives. Prior to joining SureScripts, Hall served as a management consultant in the health care practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers. As a CPA with extensive experience in pharmaceuticals and managed care, he was closely involved in developing the business and financial plans for SureScripts during the last year. Previously, Hall served as chief financial officer for a division of Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield, where he implemented cost reduction and profit improvement initiatives and was responsible for strategic and financial planning.
Paul L. Uhrig General Counsel, Executive Vice President of Corporate Development, Chief Privacy Officer As general counsel and executive vice president in charge of corporate development, Mr. Uhrig oversees all legal matters, corporate development and federal legislative affairs for SureScripts. Mr. Uhrig came to SureScripts from the law firm of Gardner Carton & Douglas LLP in Washington, D.C., where he was vice chairman of the firm's corporate department, chairman of the corporate department's regulated industries transactions practice group, and a member of the firm's health department. Prior to joining SureScripts, Mr. Uhrig represented SureScripts as its outside general counsel since its inception. Mr. Uhrig brings 20 years of legal experience to SureScripts, focusing on the healthcare industry throughout that time. At Gardner Carton & Douglas, Mr. Uhrig focused on mergers, asset and stock acquisitions, joint venture formation and corporate planning with healthcare clients. His clients included private equity investors in middle market transactions, portfolio companies, health care systems, ancillary providers of health care services, physician groups, and investors involved with health industry projects and various other enterprises related to the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Gardner Carton & Douglas, Mr. Uhrig was a partner in the Washington office of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. Mr. Uhrig has extensive experience structuring joint ventures and business arrangements in compliance with applicable corporate, securities and tax laws, federal and state fraud and abuse provisions, privacy laws, fee-splitting statutes and other corporate and health care regulatory provisions. Mr. Uhrig received his law degree from the American University, Washington College of Law, and his Bachelors of Arts in Economics from The University of Notre Dame.
David Yakimischak Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer As chief technology officer and executive vice president for SureScripts, Mr. Yakimischak overseses a team responsible for all information technology, support operations, product development and product management, including SureScripts’ extensive technology provider certification program. Mr. Yakimischak has 25 years of experience in technology management and product development in the healthcare, financial and publishing industries. From 1999 to 2002, Mr. Yakimischak was the CTO at MedicaLogic/Medscape, a leading provider of electronic medical record (EMR) software and developer of the leading clinical reference Web site for physicians and medical professionals. He played an important role in taking the company from early start-up through an IPO, a merger with two other healthcare companies and, finally, through its acquisition by WebMD and GE Medical Systems (now GE Healthcare). Mr. Yakimischak was responsible for all technology, including development, operations, information technology and business systems. Prior to his work with MedicaLogic/Medscape, Mr. Yakimischak served as the director of product development at Dow Jones Interactive where he worked to transform the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones News Retrieval into a leading supplier of news and information via the Web. He had responsibility for product development, project management, quality assurance, technical support and consulting services. Mr. Yakimischak started his career at Merrill Lynch Canada, where he was responsible for telecommunications and datacenter operations. Mr. Yakimischak has served on the editorial advisory board of InfoWorld magazine, is a founding member of the CTO Club in New York City and studied computer science and engineering at the University of Toronto.
Bob Beckley Senior Vice President of Alliances and Product Strategy A senior manager with extensive experience in pharmacy management, electronic prescribing and provider programs, Mr. Beckley serves as Senior Vice President of Pharmacy Relations and Product Strategy for SureScripts. His responsibilities include relationships with all pharmacy chains and pharmacy technology vendors, standards implementation with all of SureScripts' technology providers and new product strategies. Mr. Beckley joined SureScript Systems after a career with Synergy Health Care Inc., where he was responsible for new product development and data acquisition in the pharmacy sector. Beckley also served as Senior Vice President at PDX, Inc., a pharmacy software and services company, and as Director of Management Information Systems at FlexRx, a mail order pharmacy. His expertise is in sales, marketing and vendor software systems. Mr. Beckley is an active member of the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs, where he has worked on the issues of standardization and pharmacy/prescriber interface. He is one of the authors of the NCPDP SCRIPT Standard v.1. He is the recipient of NCPDP's Time and Benjamin D. Ward Awards and was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2003. He is also a member of American Society for Automation in Pharmacy, National Community Pharmacists Association, National Association of Chain Drug Stores and Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange. Mr. Beckley received a BS Degree in Business & Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Kate Berry Senior Vice President of Business Development As Senior Vice President of Business Development and Alliances, Ms. Berry is responsible for managing the national roll out of SureScripts’ community adoption and utilization programs, a uniquely collaborative methodology of working closely with a wide range of stakeholders in each community to build awareness and support for improving the prescribing process and adopting electronic prescribing. Ms. Berry is also responsible for managing the relationships with physician technology companies that are connected to SureScripts to accelerate the adoption and optimal use of electronic prescribing including understanding change management, workflow integration, physician deployments, physician-pharmacy communications, and connectivity best practices. In addition, Ms. Berry is responsible for SureScripts’ strategies for working with personal health record companies, hospitals and regional health information organizations, and pharmaceutical benefits management companies and payers to develop new business opportunities around new services that SureScripts is offering in the marketplace. Ms. Berry joined SureScripts after a career in healthcare management consulting and as a non-profit executive. As a healthcare consultant, Ms. Berry worked with hospitals, health systems, medical groups, medical associations, pharmaceutical companies and others in the industry on strategic and business planning, partnerships and affiliations, governance and management restructuring, clinical service line plans, and growth strategies. At the American Red Cross, Ms. Berry served as Executive Vice President of External Affairs and Chief of Staff. As such, she was responsible for corporate strategy, communications and marketing, government relations, integrated growth and development, international policy and relations, and global safety and security and played a key role in developing a new strategic plan for the biomedical services enterprise. Ms. Berry holds a Masters degree in public policy from Duke University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and English from Goucher College.
Kathleen Mahan Vice President, Product Management As Vice President of Product Management, Ms. Mahan is primarily responsible for incorporation of strategic requirements into corporate development plans. In addition, she oversees the implementations and certification process for all software applications transacting on the SureScripts Network. She remains active in standards bodies and steering committees, including but not limited to: NCPDP, ANSI X12, American Healthcare Information Community (AHIC), Continuity of Care Record (CCR) and the Rhode Island Department of Health. She came to SureScripts after a career with Vitria Systems / XMLSolutions where she served as the Director of Strategic Accounts and Director of Consulting. She was responsible for consulting services in the healthcare sector as well as strategic HIPAA related implementations. She oversaw key accounts and led HIPAA claims restructuring projects for some of the largest national payers. Prior to Vitria, Ms. Mahan worked for SAP Americas as a Principal Consultant where she led multi-million dollar Enterprise Software Implementation projects. Ms. Mahan received her Masters of Business Administration degree from Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Law and Communications from Northern Arizona University.
Ken Whittemore, Jr., R.Ph. Senior Vice President, Clinical Practice Integration Mr. Whittemore comes to SureScripts after serving as President and CEO of CARE Pharmacies, Inc., a community pharmacy franchise with more than 40 locations in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Whittemore is a licensed pharmacist and former independent pharmacy owner who practiced for nearly two decades in hospital and community pharmacy settings. He is also experienced in association management, having served as Vice President of Management, Professional and State Affairs for National Community Pharmacists Association, NCPA. While with NCPA, he specialized in third-party and managed care issues, pharmacy practice management resources and acted as the association's liaison with national, state and local pharmacy organizations.
