SureScripts

Prior to using the the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange™, operated by SureScripts for the electronic exchange of prescription data, all physician and pharmacy technology companies must go through an implementation and certification process to become a SureScripts Certified Solutions Provider™. This process ensures that electronic prescribing solution providers are able to send and receive supported electronic messages and that the solution is providing open choice for medication selection and dispensing location. Additionally, the process ensures that the technology systems work in accordance with industry-accepted standards for the electronic exchange of prescription data between physicians and pharmacies.

SureScripts implementation and certification process is comprised of four distinct steps:

  • Connectivity Phase (Implementation): Physician and pharmacy technology vendors select a communications interface and determine whether they will connect directly to the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange, operated by SureScripts or through an aggregator, a "SureScripts Certified Solutions Provider" that acts as an intermediary between SureScripts and an end-user.
  • Application Modification Phase (Implementation): Vendor-initiated software modifications are implemented to support the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange, operated by SureScripts Implementation Guide. SureScripts works as a resource to ensure that all the requirements are met.
  • Testing Phase (Implementation/Certification): Testing is conducted to ensure accurate and reliable communications to the the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange, operated by SureScripts. SureScripts Certified Solutions Providers™ send and receive test messages to SureScripts' staging/testing environment.
  • Production Phase (Certification Process): Moves the process to the the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange, operated by SureScripts production/live environment. At this point, SureScripts Certified Solutions Providers™ can use the network for electronic prescription communications.
