The Safe-Rx Awards are given to the top 10 e-prescribing states in the nation and the five additional states that have shown the most significant improvement in the use of e-prescribing over the previous year. The rankings are determined by the number of prescriptions routed electronically as a percentage of the total number of prescriptions eligible for electronic routing.
At the end of 2009, Surescripts will add the use of prescription benefit information and prescription history to the calculation of state rankings. This approach recognizes the equal role that prescription benefit, history and routing services play in improving the overall quality and safety of the prescribing process. It is Surescripts' position that actual use of all three of these services serves to define "meaningful use of electronic prescribing" under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Surescripts created the Safe-Rx Award to raise awareness of e-prescribing as a means of enhancing patient safety by providing a more secure, accurate and informed prescribing process. Congratulations to Massachusetts, and all the honorees from the 4th Annual Safe-Rx Awards.
