Evangelist Award

The Safe-Rx Evangelist Award goes to a single person or organization whose work has made an extraordinary impact on the awareness and use of e-prescribing as a critical means of reducing medication errors. It is the only award of its kind in health care and each year attracts broad attention from industry, government and the media. This year, Surescripts presented the Safe-Rx Evangelist Award to Dr. John Halamka of Massachusetts.

John HalamkaJohn D. Halamka, MD, MS, is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Chief Information Officer of Harvard Medical School, Chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), co-Chair of the national HIT Standards Committee, and a practicing Emergency Physician.

As Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, he is responsible for all clinical, financial, administrative and academic information technology serving 3000 doctors, 14000 employees and two million patients. As Chief Information Officer of Harvard Medical School, he oversees all educational, research and administrative computing for 18000 faculty and 3000 students. As Chairman of NEHEN he oversees clinical and administrative data exchange in Massachusetts. As co-Chair of the HIT Standards Committee he facilitates the process of electronic standards harmonization among stakeholders nationwide.
